Tributes to D-Day Wireless Operator
The following link will take you to an article in The Northern Echo paying tribute to Jean Galloway, a local woman who played an important part in the D-Day landings. She met her husband on Croft bridge when she was 16.
Daniel Defoe, best known as author of Robinson Crusoe, also wrote a three volume travel book where reference is made to Hell Kettles pond. The book, Tour through the whole island of Great Britain, was published between 1724 and 1727. The link below contains some excerpts from the book including the reference to Hell Kettles, and a less than complimentary opinion of Darlington. They may be found towards the end of the page.
